Chapter Eight
Thomas pushed another shot of tequila across the smooth oak bar. âDrink.â
Usually Iâd have hesitated, but not tonight. I threw the shot back in one gulp, wincing only slightly as it seared the inside of my throat. Coughing, I thumped my chest for a few moments. Once I was sure the tequila wasnât going to come back up, I groaned and buried my head in my arms.
âIâll admit,â Thomas said, âIâve never known anyone else who was almost murdered twice.â
âItâs not funny,â I mumbled.
âBro, if you think Iâm making a joke, youâre insane.â
I lifted my head and met his sincere gaze. âItâs not my fault.â
âOf course not.â
âEveryone is going to think Iâm cursed. Iâm probably never going to get another date because everyone will be afraid to get near me.â
âNah.â
âI donât know, man. I wouldnât date me,â I slurred.
The alcohol was definitely hitting me. My legs felt rubbery and my tongue sluggish. Not surprising, considering Iâd had four shots and two beers. If I wasnât careful, Iâd be spending my night on my knees. And not in a porno movie way either. More like in The Exorcist way, with my head spinning while spewing unthinkable things.
âWhat am I doing wrong? Why do so many people want to kill me?â
âTo be fair, you probably would have just been very unlucky in this instance. I donât think you were the intended target on that yacht, right?â
âWho knows?â I mumbled.
âMerrick doesnât think you were.â
âPfft, Merrick.â I scowled. âWho cares what he thinks?â
Patting my back, Thomas said, âOkay, what has he done this time? I thought you two were getting along these days?â
âOur cease-fire has ceased to exist.â I rubbed my temples. âWeâre back to hating each other.â
Thomasâ mouth drooped. âNo. I donât want to hear that.â
âSorry. Heâs a jerk. Iâm tired of trying to walk the line between friend and⦠you know⦠not-friend.â
âYouâre so eloquent when youâre drunk.â
âItâs a gift.â
âTell me what happened. Why are you and Merrick at odds again?â
I scowled. âHow about you put your energy into getting me another shot? I need another shot.â
He grimaced. âAs you know, Iâm all for getting drunk. But I think you should pace yourself.â
âWell, when you almost die twice, you realize how important it is to enjoy life.â
Glancing at his watch, he said, âIf I get you more shots, I predict in about two hours you will not be enjoying life at all. I think youâll be praying for death.â
Maybe he was right. I did feel pretty buzzed already. âI wouldnât say no to a glass of water.â
âSmart choice.â He laughed and signaled to the bartender. âLouis, can we get some water?â
âYou got it.â Louis smiled.
The door to the Rusty Pier opened, and a blustery wind ushered in a college-aged kid and a middle-aged woman. I was surprised to recognize the woman as Mary Green, Allisterâs mother. When the guy with her peeled off his scarf and beanie, I was shocked to identify him as the kid who might have given me a flat tire.
